About the Plugin
What the Plugin Does
The Windscribe plugin is our official desktop plugin for ChatGPT and other compatible local chat apps. It lets you control the Windscribe app installed on your computer from a chat: check your connection and firewall status, see your public or VPN IP and data allowance as reported by Windscribe, choose a VPN location or protocol, connect and disconnect, and use supported IP and app management actions.
The plugin works with your existing Windscribe account. It does not sell subscriptions, collect payments or control the Windscribe browser extension. Any VPN or firewall change you request affects this computer's network connection.
This page covers the plugin only. Your use of the Windscribe app and service is covered by our Privacy Policy.
How It Works
The plugin runs a small local MCP (Model Context Protocol) server on your computer, bundled with everything it needs. It has no listening network port and no separate hosted backend. When you make a request, the plugin runs the Windscribe command-line interface (CLI) installed on your computer and sends the result back to your chat app.
Data Collection
Information You Provide
When you ask the plugin to do something, it receives only the details that request needs, such as:
- A VPN location from the Windscribe server list, or one of your static IPs
- A protocol and port
- A favorite IP
- The firewall state you want
- A supported setting
VPN locations are picked from Windscribe's server list. The plugin never asks for your GPS location or home address.
Signing In
The plugin uses the session you already have in the Windscribe app, so you sign in through Windscribe, not through the chat. None of the plugin's actions ask for your password, one-time passcode, payment card or account token.
Information Processed on Your Computer
To carry out a request, the plugin runs the Windscribe CLI on your computer. The CLI's status output can include your IP address and data allowance, which the plugin briefly holds in temporary memory while it processes the request. A basic status check returns only selected connection details to your chat app, not your IP or data usage. Those are returned only when you ask for them.
Information Returned to Your Chat App
The plugin sends your chat app the details of each request and its results. Depending on what you ask for, results can include:
- Connection, login, firewall and protocol status
- Windscribe server locations
- Windscribe CLI capability and version information
- Your IP address and data usage, as reported by Windscribe
- Your static IP and favorite IP lists, which can contain IP addresses
This information may appear in your conversation history.
Who Receives Your Information
- The Windscribe app on your computer receives the commands you request.
- Your chat app receives the details of each request and its results.
- Windscribe's services may be contacted by the Windscribe app for VPN, account and update functions, the same way they are when you use the app directly.
The plugin doesn't run its own public IP lookup on the web. The IP it reports comes from Windscribe.
Storage and Retention
The plugin doesn't keep a history of your requests. Request data only exists in memory while a request is being processed. The plugin doesn't write log files or send automatic telemetry.
To stop requests from overlapping, the plugin creates a temporary lock for your user account in your computer's temporary files folder. Its name includes a shortened hash of your home folder path, never the content of your requests, and the lock is normally released as soon as the request finishes.
The plugin doesn't control records kept outside of it:
- Your chat app keeps your conversation history under its own retention rules.
- The Windscribe app and service follow our Privacy Policy.
- Crash reports created by your operating system or chat app follow their own rules.
Diagnostic Logs
The plugin can't read or upload your Windscribe diagnostic logs. The Windscribe CLI may still list its own logs command among its capabilities, but the plugin doesn't offer it as an action it can run.
User Control and Choices
You decide which actions to request, and your chat app's tool permissions let you control what the plugin may do. Disabling or uninstalling the plugin stops all future requests. It doesn't, by itself, delete your earlier chat history or your Windscribe account and service records. Your chat history is managed in your chat app, and you can delete your Windscribe account at any time in the My Account section.
