The short answer is yes… but only for the person sitting next to you. Incognito mode only prevents your browser from storing your search history, but it doesn’t make your browsing private. You know what does? A VPN. 

While both get lumped together under the "privacy tool" umbrella, they’re actually solving completely different problems for completely different audiences. The websites you visit

They still see your real IP address, which is a unique number tied to your connection that reveals your approximate location and who your ISP is. They still know you're there. They're still logging your visit. And they know how long you stayed and where you clicked. 

Your network administrator

If you're at school, at work, or on a public Wi-Fi network, the person managing that network can see every domain you're hitting, incognito or not. Your employer doesn't need to look through your browser history if they never lost visibility in the first place.

WebRTC Leaks and DNS Leaks

While the only leak you're currently worried about is the one dripping under your kitchen sink, your browser is likely springing its own quiet leaks in the background.

WebRTC is a browser feature used for things like video calls and peer-to-peer connections. It's also a privacy issue that most VPN guides gloss over. By default, WebRTC can reveal your real local IP address even when a VPN is active, because the browser handles the WebRTC request directly, bypassing the VPN tunnel entirely. Opening an incognito window doesn't change this, because incognito doesn't touch how your browser handles network requests.

DNS leaks are a related problem. DNS is essentially the internet's phonebook: it translates a human-readable address like "windscribe.com" into a numerical IP address your device can actually connect to. A VPN swaps your IP address. Incognito clears your cookies. But the moment you sign into Google in an incognito window, even while a VPN is running, Google knows it's you. Not because of your IP or a cookie, but because you typed your username and password. There's no technical fix for this. It's a behavior problem, not a tool problem.

If genuine session anonymity is what you're after, don't sign into accounts during that session. If you do sign in, the privacy stack is protecting you from third parties, not from the platforms you've handed your credentials to.

If your threat is your roommate, partner, or kids
