Your VPN logs activity

DNS or IPv6 leaks

Sometimes, the tunnel has holes. A DNS leak happens when your request to find a website bypasses the VPN and goes straight to your ISP, telling them exactly where you’re going. Similarly, IPv6 traffic can sometimes slip past a VPN that only supports IPv4. Most modern VPNs handle both, but you should always verify this. We’ll show you how later on.

You started the torrent client before the VPN

If you launch your torrent client before the VPN is active, the client immediately starts announcing your real IP to every peer it can find. These connections can stay cached even after the VPN kicks in, leaving you exposed while you think you’re protected.

Jurisdiction matters. A government can compel a company to respond to legal requests. Now, if the VPN truly keeps no logs, the provider has nothing useful to hand over. However, the legal pressure is real. Choosing a provider that’s transparent about their jurisdiction and their technical inability to provide logs is your best bet for peace of mind.

What this means in practice

This visibility gap is your primary defense against two major headaches. 

ISPs that typically engage in throttling BitTorrent traffic can no longer identify the protocol pattern through the encrypted tunnel, so their speed brakes stop working. Also, ISPs that forward DMCA-style notices rely on copyright holders identifying IPs in swarms. Since your real IP isn't in that swarm, only the VPN’s is, the ISP has no way to link that specific torrenting activity back to your account.

Essentially, port forwarding allows your torrent client to be visible to more peers in the swarm. Without it, you can only connect to people who have already opened their doors. With it, you can receive incoming connections from anyone. This results in faster download speeds and, more importantly, much faster upload speeds.

You really only need to mess with this if you’re a heavy seeder, a member of a private tracker where maintaining a specific seed ratio is mandatory, or if you're on a particularly sluggish network. If you’re just a casual downloader who doesn't mind waiting an extra forty-five minutes for a movie, you can safely ignore this. The connection will still work, it’ll just be a bit slower.

Test your VPN IP

Finding a copyright notice in your inbox can feel like getting a letter from the principal's office, but panic is your worst enemy here. 

Most of the time, this isn't a lawsuit. It’s a "notice of claim" forwarded by your ISP because a copyright holder spotted your IP address in a swarm. Your ISP is usually legally required to pass these along, but they aren't the ones coming after you, they’re just the messenger. These notices typically contain the title of the work, the exact date and time of the event, and the IP address that was caught.
